Geisteswissenschaft Name: Akegarasu Haya Prize Art: The Prize was established in memory of Akegarasu Haya (1877-1954), one of the famous thinkers in modern Japan, who was born in Matto. His works on religion and philosophy exerted a great influ- ence on Japanese culture in the first half of this century, bridging the gap between the East and the West. The prize was also established to contribute, through the essay contest, to the spiritual development of the people living in a time when material abundance obscures our spiritual lives. The essay can be on almost any branch of huma- nities, including religion, philosophy, history, li- terature and education, and, where possible, should indicate the way to the future for us who live in the age of uncertainty. It should be noted that, in the second section, the essays should propose practical ideas and should be concerned with the education of young people who will be the support and dri- ving force of the world in the 21st century.
